The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested two suspects for the unlawful possession of a large cache of ammunition and related military-style equipment at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier in the Ashanti Region.
The suspects, identified as Kwame Afram, a bus driver, and Godfred Essel, a mate, were arrested on December 26, 2025, during a routine police operation. They were traveling in a Kia Granbird commercial bus with registration number GT 5771-18 from Accra toward Walewale, en route to Paga, when officers intercepted the vehicle.

A thorough search of the bus led to the discovery of two concealed containers holding a total of 2,600 rounds of AK-47 ammunition. Further inspection of the vehicle uncovered a bag hidden under the driver’s seat containing two bulletproof plates, a black crushed helmet, and a pair of long boots.
The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while the bus and all retrieved items have been impounded as exhibits.
The police say investigations are ongoing to establish the source and intended destination of the ammunition, as well as to identify any accomplices or networks linked to the illegal consignment.
The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public safety and urged members of the public to support security agencies with credible information to help combat the illegal trafficking of arms and ammunition in the country.
