A dawn operation by the Ghana Immigration Service has led to the arrest of more than 600 undocumented migrants in Kumasi, officials have confirmed.
The exercise, conducted on Tuesday, 21 April between 03:30 and 05:00, targeted several parts of the city and resulted in the detention of 606 individuals, among them 381 children. Authorities say the operation forms part of efforts to address rising concerns over street begging and sanitation.
The Ashanti Regional Commander of the service, DCOI Fred Amankwa, said the operation focused on areas including Asawase, Aboabo, Alabar and Sabon Zongo, where large numbers of undocumented migrants are believed to reside.
Officials say those arrested have been transported to Prampram for screening and identity verification.
The presence of a significant number of children among those detained has raised questions about welfare and possible exploitation. Authorities have not yet provided detailed information on the ages or nationalities of those involved.
Some residents have welcomed the move, citing concerns about congestion and public health, while others have called for a more measured response that considers humanitarian factors.
The immigration service says further investigations are underway, and decisions regarding the status of those detained will be taken following the screening process.
