In a major development, the Kumasi Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church announced its commitment to utilize approximately 18,000 acres of land allocated by the Asantehene to begin large-scale commercial wheat production. The move is expected to significantly expand the scope of the project and position Asanteman as a key hub for wheat production in Ghana.

Additionally, Arima Farms and the Crop Research Institute formally sought the Asantehene’s permission to name their first commercial wheat product in his honor. The proposed name, “Opemsuo Wheat,” pays tribute to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who is also known by the appellation “Opemsuo.”
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II commended the delegation for their innovation and collaborative spirit, emphasizing the importance of agriculture in ensuring food security, creating jobs, and reducing Ghana’s dependence on wheat imports.

The initiative represents a unique partnership between traditional leadership, scientific research, international agribusiness, and faith-based institutions. With plans underway to scale production, the project is poised to make a lasting impact on Ghana’s agricultural landscape and contribute meaningfully to national development.

Further announcements on the rollout of commercial production and branding of the “Opemsuo Wheat” are expected in the coming months.
