At least 380 commercial drivers have been arrested over the past month for charging unapproved transport fares, according to the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene.
In a statement shared on his official social media page, Dr Amoakohene said the arrests form part of intensified efforts by authorities to protect commuters from arbitrary fare hikes and ensure strict compliance with approved transport tariffs.
He noted that enforcement agencies have been deployed across major transport corridors in the region to monitor commercial transport operations and clamp down on drivers who flout fare regulations.
Beyond enforcement, the Regional Minister disclosed that discussions are currently underway with the Ministry of Transport to provide additional bus support, a move expected to ease transportation challenges and stabilize fares.
Dr Amoakohene stressed that the government remains committed to working with transport unions, security agencies, and other stakeholders to maintain order within the transport sector while safeguarding the interests of the public.
He urged drivers to adhere strictly to approved fares and advised commuters to report any instances of overcharging to the appropriate authorities.
The latest development comes amid growing public concerns over rising transport costs and enforcement of fare regulations across the country.
