The Asanteman Council has destooled Otumfuo Kyeame Kofi Nti following a high-level meeting held at Manhyia Palace on Monday.
The meeting, convened under the authority of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, brought together traditional leaders to deliberate on key matters, including petitions and reports presented before the council.
Grounds For Destoolment
The decision to remove Kofi Nti from his position as Okyeame (royal linguist) followed several serious allegations.
Foremost among them were concerns about his royal lineage, particularly his reported inability to invoke the sacred Otumfuo Ntam Kɛseɛ, a critical requirement tied to legitimacy within the role.
He was also accused of improperly handling the invocation of the revered oath, allegedly hoarding multiple instances in violation of long-established customs upheld by his predecessors.
Breach Of Duty
The council further found that he failed in his duties as Okyeame by not properly reporting cases involving the Ntam Kɛseɛ. This omission was deemed a significant breach of responsibility, undermining the integrity of the office.
Additional Allegations
Additional claims raised by the Ayaasehene pointed to irregularities in the enstoolment of an Ayaase Dikro, further contributing to the council’s decision.
A Rare Traditional Action
The destoolment of a sitting Okyeame is considered a rare occurrence, highlighting the strict expectations placed on occupants of such a revered position within the Ashanti traditional system.
Further official communication from the palace is expected in the coming days.
